Light & Data Installation

By CTRL + ALT (Jan Everaert & Joni De Borger)

For Brussels Mobility & Bright Brussels

Commissioned by Brussels Mobility, we conceptualized and developed a light installation for Bright, the Brussels festival of lights. The goal was to visualize the rise in cycling activity across the city over the past four years. We collected data from bike counters spread throughout Brussels and transformed it into an immersive light and sound experience that revealed shifts in cycling habits across years and seasons.

Using five years of data, we built 12 sculptural ‘artificial trees’, each equipped with five illuminated rings—one for every year from 2018 to 2022. These rings visualized the growth in cyclist numbers, with their dimensions corresponding to yearly totals. The installation played out as a journey through four seasons of cycling, represented through animated visuals and changing color schemes.

We designed and produced the custom LED modules, and used pixel mapping to display the data visualisation on the trees. A soundscape was composed by Robbe Petitjean and made interactive by us. This included spatial audio, allowing visitors to experience contrasts between different parts of the city and to distinguish the real-time interactions.

Real-time data added another layer—when someone cycled past a counter elsewhere in Brussels, the top ring of the corresponding tree lit up, accompanied by a soft bell tone, briefly interrupting the flow and grounding the installation in the present moment.
